Solana<\/a> validators are less than 3 million SOL away from triggering a formal vote on a major governance overhaul that would increase daily token burns by up to 1,300% and accelerate the network’s long-term disinflation timeline by three years.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The combined proposal, designated SGP-0003, merges two technical upgrades aimed at curbing circulating supply growth. Under SIMD-0553, the implementation of resource-based transaction fees would increase daily SOL destruction from about 650 SOL\u2014roughly $48,000\u2014to between 7,500 and 9,000 SOL, worth up to $668,000. Meanwhile, SIMD-0550 would double Solana’s annual disinflation rate to 30%, advancing the arrival of its minimum 1.5% annual inflation floor from 2032 to 2029.<\/p>\n

To progress past the support phase to a formal discussion and validator vote, the measure must secure 65.16 million SOL in staked backing prior to an Aug. 18 deadline. As of Tuesday morning, 73 supporters had pledged 63 million SOL, representing 14.4% of total staked supply. Prominent ecosystem participants backing the initiative include Helius, Jupiter, Staking Facilities, Drift, OtterSec, and Solana Compass.<\/p>\n

Solana currently issues approximately 60,000 new SOL daily to reward network validators and stakers. Under the network’s baseline parameters, annual inflation began at 8% and decreases by 15% each year. Doubling that disinflation rate directly reduces future issuance, meaning that while the proposed fee changes would not make SOL net-deflationary immediately, they significantly reduce net supply growth.<\/p>\n

If the 65.16 million SOL threshold is met before the deadline, the governance package will enter an official discussion phase prior to a final binding vote among network validators.<\/p>\n

SOL was trading near $74 with a market capitalization of $43 billion, remaining well below its historical high of $293. On the prediction market platform Myriad<\/a>, traders currently assign a 70% probability that SOL will decline to $40 before recovering to $160.<\/p>\n
