The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) released by the Labor Department on Tuesday showed vacancies falling from a revised 7.54 million in May, matching broader Wall Street expectations. Job openings rose by 97,000 across transportation, warehousing, and utility sectors, alongside a 39,000 boost in federal government roles. Conversely, job availability shrank among nondurable goods manufacturers and wholesale trade operations.<\/p>\n

Workforce stability remained largely intact during the month. Total layoffs were little-changed at 1.8 million, while voluntary resignations\u2014a key barometer of worker confidence\u2014edged slightly higher. Gross monthly hiring reached 5.3 million, though total hiring activity remains below the post-pandemic surge when monthly hires regularly eclipsed 6 million.<\/p>\n

Despite global economic headwinds, domestic hiring has rebounded from its 2025 slump, when elevated borrowing costs and trade policy friction kept monthly job additions below 10,000\u2014the slowest non-recession pace since 2002. Employers have added an average of 92,000 jobs per month this year, absorbing the shock of crude supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf, where hostile actions previously disrupted daily traffic of roughly 15 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The energy shock comes as the Federal Reserve monitors labor tightness for potential wage-driven inflation, balancing energy-driven price spikes against overall employment levels. The Strait of Hormuz serves as the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoint, normally accounting for over 20% of global petroleum liquid consumption.<\/p>\n

Economists surveyed by FactSet<\/a> anticipate the Labor Department’s upcoming July employment report will show 100,000 net jobs created, up from 57,000 in June, with the national unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.2%.<\/p>\n

While a 100,000 monthly gain was historically considered modest, ongoing demographic shifts have reshaped labor market dynamics. Accelerated retirements among baby boomers and tighter immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump<\/a> have diminished the net inflow of new job seekers, lowering the estimated “break-even” threshold required to maintain a stable unemployment rate to near zero.<\/p>\n
