McDonald's<\/a> has named Skye Anderson as president of McDonald’s USA amid a sharp deceleration in U.S. sales growth driven by cautious consumer spending. The executive transition comes as the fast-food giant reported a 0.8% increase in U.S. same-store sales for the second quarter\u2014a marked slowdown from 2.5% growth in the prior-year period.<\/p>\n

Despite domestic sales pressure, the Chicago-based company surpassed Wall Street earnings expectations for the three months ended June 30. McDonald’s reported Q2 net income of $2.36 billion, or $3.32 per share, compared with $2.25 billion, or $3.14 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share<\/a> reached $3.38, topping the $3.32 consensus estimate from analysts polled by FactSet<\/a>. Total revenue grew to $7.1 billion from $6.84 billion, slightly under Wall Street forecasts of $7.13 billion. Company shares rose 1.6% in premarket trading following the release.<\/p>\n

Global same-store sales grew 1.3%, reflecting broader headwind trends across international operations. In the U.S., rising costs have squeezed lower-income consumers, reducing discretionary spending at restaurant chains. McDonald’s had cautioned in May that consumer anxiety over geopolitical tensions, including U.S. conflict with Iran, alongside high gas prices, could impact sales. AAA<\/a> data showed regular gasoline prices peaked at $4.56 per gallon on May 21, adding financial pressure on consumers.<\/p>\n

To regain traffic among budget-conscious diners, McDonald’s launched a simplified McValue menu in April featuring 10 items priced at $3 or less. Fast-food operators across the sector have increasingly turned to promotional pricing to counter foot-traffic declines following years of cumulative menu price hikes. The company noted that U.S. comps in the year-ago period had benefited significantly from a promotional meal tied to “A Minecraft Movie,” creating a high baseline for comparison.<\/p>\n
