A $5.5 million donation from OpenAI<\/a> co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna, has pushed a $10 million emergency conservation campaign past its target, securing 63 acres of prime Southern California forest and shoreline slated for luxury residential development.<\/p>\n

The acquisition of the Moon Camp property in Fawnskin, California, blocks a long-contested plan to build 50 luxury homes and a private marina along Big Bear Lake. The shoreline parcel represents the last undeveloped stretch of waterfront habitat near the nesting tree of Jackie and Shadow, a pair of bald eagles whose live-streamed lives have drawn a global audience of millions.<\/p>\n

Organized by the non-profit Friends of Big Bear Valley, the six-month fundraising drive had collected roughly $4.5 million through more than 25,000 individual public donations. The Brockmans’ gift closed the remaining gap just days before a strict purchase deadline set by the property owners.<\/p>\n

“We are beyond grateful for the tireless support of so many people these past six months. This is a special community that has a real love for Jackie and Shadow\u2019s wellbeing along with nature,” said Jenny Voisard, spokesperson and fundraising lead for Friends of Big Bear Valley.<\/p>\n

San Bernardino County officials had previously approved the Moon Camp subdivision, asserting the construction would not directly disrupt local bald eagle populations. However, wildlife biologists and local conservationists warned that loss of forage access along the northern shore could permanently degrade the breeding territory. Bald eagles, protected federally under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, rely heavily on undisturbed shoreline access for hunting fish and waterfowl.<\/p>\n

The financial milestone arrives as the eagle pair faces a grave health crisis. Jackie, the female eagle, remains in critical condition at the Ojai Raptor Center after being rescued on the lakeshore in mid-July following a territorial fight with two younger eagles.<\/p>\n

Veterinary specialists found Jackie severely anemic with active kidney inflammation. After showing signs of recovery following a blood transfusion and transfer out of the intensive care unit, her condition deteriorated this week. Veterinary staff reported that her packed cell volume (PCV)\u2014a key measure of red blood cells\u2014dropped to 13 percent, indicating worsening anemia.<\/p>\n

“Her packed cell volume (PCV) has dropped to 13%, which means her anemia has worsened since our last update,” the Ojai Raptor Center stated, noting that teams are pursuing advanced diagnostic testing to identify the underlying cause of her illness.<\/p>\n
