Global crude oil benchmarks plunged on Monday after President Donald Trump<\/a> announced that Middle Eastern allies had framed a potential diplomatic agreement to halt the conflict with Iran<\/a> and reopen the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, despite contradicting statements from Iranian officials denying any direct negotiations with Washington.<\/p>\n

West Texas Intermediate<\/a> crude for U.S. delivery dropped roughly 6.2% in Monday morning trading, falling by about $5 to trade around $79.45 a barrel. International standard Brent crude<\/a> slid more than 3.5% to $79.30 a barrel. The retreat marks a significant decline from earlier in the year, when drone strikes, missile threats, and naval mines in the Persian Gulf pushed crude prices above $110 a barrel, well above the $60 to $70 pre-conflict baseline.<\/p>\n

The sudden market drop was sparked by statements from Trump on Sunday evening indicating he was pausing planned military strikes against Iranian targets. Trump posted on Truth Social that regional partners had established an outline to end hostilities that would “include the Immediate, Complete and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,” with formal discussions slated for Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

However, Tehran swiftly contested Washington’s characterization of the negotiations. A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry told Reuters that no meetings or diplomatic talks with U.S. representatives were scheduled or taking place, clarifying that Iran’s only active maritime discussions were being conducted with Oman regarding transit management through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz serves as the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoint, carrying roughly 20 million barrels of crude and refined petroleum products daily\u2014representing approximately one-fifth of global petroleum consumption. Any sustained disruption to tanker traffic through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman directly threatens international energy supplies.<\/p>\n

Despite the steep drop in crude futures, relief has yet to reach American motorists at the pump. The AAA national average for regular gasoline stood at $4.095 per gallon on Monday, representing a 7% increase over the past month and a 30% jump compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Following an interview by Chevron CEO Mike Wirth on FOX Business with Maria Bartiromo, Trump publicly pressed energy executives to pass savings along to drivers immediately. Trump noted his administration’s assistance in restoring Chevron’s operations in Venezuela, writing on social media: “The only thing he conveniently forgot to mention is that, without the genius, foresight, strength, and stability, of the TRUMP Administration, the Oil Industry, and our Country itself, would be DEAD! As an example, they threw Mike and Chevron out of Venezuela, but now they’re back, far bigger and stronger than ever before, expecting to make a fortune! The White House has consistently targeted retail fuel sellers over high pump prices, alleging that stations maintain wide profit margins while wholesale costs drop. Industry groups representing independent gas station owners and fuel marketers push back against those claims, noting that retail prices lag crude markets by several weeks. Because fuel stations must sell through existing inventory purchased at higher wholesale rates before lowering prices, retail pump adjustments typically follow a gradual downward trajectory even during sharp crude sell-offs.<\/p>\n
