A severe shortage of functional 70mm IMAX projection systems across North America has sparked a massive ticket resale market for Christopher Nolan\u2019s film adaptation The Odyssey<\/em>, with secondary market listings reaching up to $3,000 per ticket as the movie surpassed $700 million at the global box office in its first two weeks.<\/p>\n

With only 34 commercial IMAX venues in the United States and Canada equipped to project the massive 70mm film rolls, scarcity has driven standard $25 to $35 tickets into premium resale commodities. On platforms such as eBay, single tickets for peak showtimes have fetched between $400 and $3,000, while a pair of premium New York tickets sold for $2,000. New York content creator Sarah Morrison secured a 2 p.m. screening ticket on eBay for $49\u2014well above standard theater pricing of $10 to $20\u2014calling it “a steal and [a] hidden gem” among listings climbing into the thousands. The intense demand has prompted extreme audience behavior; one 29-year-old moviegoer told Variety she postponed her pregnancy by two months to avoid missing opening day, while PhD student Felicia Nara booked an inter-state train trip to Rhode Island for an August screening after being priced out of local secondary markets.<\/p>\n

Carrying a $250 million production budget alongside $125 million in marketing costs, according to Forbes, the three-hour epic starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Tom Holland is currently projected to surpass Nolan\u2019s highest-grossing career hits, The Dark Knight<\/em> and The Dark Knight Rises<\/em>. Nolan previously catalyzed a similar theatrical phenomenon with his 2023 biographical drama Oppenheimer<\/em>, which demonstrated the immense commercial draw of large-format photochemical film.<\/p>\n

The bottleneck stems from the physical and technical complexity of the 15-perforation 70mm IMAX format, which offers an estimated digital equivalent resolution of up to 18,000 lines (18K)\u2014far surpassing standard 4K digital theatrical projection. Shooting the feature generated 2 million feet (roughly 100 hours) of film across 91 filming days. Because standard IMAX cameras weigh 400 pounds and hold only two and a half minutes of film per roll\u2014compared to 11 minutes on standard cameras\u2014Nolan told the New York Times that filming required constant pauses. “Every shot on those [dialogue-heavy] scenes was an engineering question, because you can\u2019t take a 400-pound camera and stick it above an actor,” Nolan said. Post-production required hand-splicing the footage using a 1940s-era machine at a single remaining film laboratory in Burbank, California.<\/p>\n

Exhibition infrastructure poses an even greater hurdle. The six-foot-tall, six-foot-long 70mm IMAX projectors require specialized xenon lamps, internal water-cooling systems, and forklifts to transport the physical film platters. Variety reported that IMAX no longer possesses complete manufacturing blueprints for these legacy systems, and many necessary replacement parts are out of production. To expand screening capacity, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told Bloomberg that the company scoured the globe to locate vintage machinery, successfully refurbishing hardware to add projectors in 42 theaters while introducing round-the-clock showtimes. Gelfond noted that showtimes scheduled for 6 a.m. sold out completely, adding, “We were prepared but there\u2019s not more we could have done.”<\/p>\n

In response to unprecedented viewer demand, Universal Pictures and IMAX have officially extended 70mm screenings through mid-September.
