The mid-June US-Iran agreement to stabilize the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> is facing a stark test of maritime reality as at least eight vessels aborted their transit attempts over the weekend. Tracking data revealed that oil tankers<\/a>, bulk carriers, and car carriers attempting to exit the Persian Gulf along the Omani coast abruptly reversed course between Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n

The maneuvers occurred near the tip of the Musandam Peninsula, a strategic geographic feature extending into the waterway. Rather than proceeding through the Omani-monitored waters favored by Western maritime security, several of these vessels\u2014including a crude carrier and two product tankers\u2014eventually turned north to utilize an Iranian-designated exit route.<\/p>\n

Tehran continues to insist that all shipping traffic must adhere strictly to its approved lanes. This insistence persists despite diplomatic efforts to lower tensions in what the U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a> classifies as the world’s most important global oil chokepoint. Approximately 21 million barrels of oil pass through this narrow passage daily, making any disruption a significant threat to global energy security.<\/p>\n

The Joint Maritime Information Center reported that while 65 ships transited the Omani side between June 30 and July 1, the recent diversions highlight a lingering fear among commercial operators. Iranian forces have reportedly issued radio warnings to vessels, demanding prior authorization for passage. Ships that have ignored these commands in recent months have faced kinetic attacks, creating a high-stakes environment where tanker companies must weigh the safety of their crews against the logistical convenience of Omani-side transit.<\/p>\n

Daily transit volumes have averaged roughly 34 vessels since Monday. While this represents an uptick from the lows seen during the height of recent hostilities, it remains significantly below historical norms. The discrepancy underscores the gap between the formal US-Iran agreement and the tactical control Iran maintains on the water.<\/p>\n

Washington continues to provide security support for vessels navigating the Omani coast, with 59 of the 65 ships transiting earlier this month receiving direct American backing. However, the decision by eight ships to turn back suggests that Tehran-approved routes are becoming the default for operators unwilling to risk a confrontation with Iranian naval assets.<\/p>\n
