In one instance reported by Skillsoft, an edtech platform, an employee realized she was using an AI tool to interpret a cryptic message from her manager, only for the tool to suggest an automated response. The realization was stark: the boss’s AI was effectively talking to the employee’s AI.

Leena Rinne, vice president of leadership and coaching at Skillsoft, defines this trend as “socially offloading.” While the industry has long discussed “cognitive offloading”—the delegation of menial tasks to technology—social offloading represents the outsourcing of human judgment, courage, and empathy. The risk, according to Rinne, is a fundamental atrophy of the interpersonal skills required to build professional relationships.

This shift is not occurring in a vacuum. It is the direct byproduct of a growing leadership vacuum as corporations aggressively flatten their hierarchies. Meta, for example, has eliminated roughly 25,000 roles since 2022, resulting in a management structure where a single supervisor may oversee 50 engineers. This 50-to-1 ratio doubles the traditional emotional intelligence and logistical limits of the span-of-control scale, which has historically been capped at 25-to-1.

When middle managers are removed, the mentorship and coaching that once bridged the gap between entry-level hires and executives disappear. Cognizant, an IT consulting firm with a global workforce of 350,000, has leaned into this by hiring entry-level workers and equipping them with AI to create what CEO Ravi Kumar S calls “commoditized expertise.” While this allows for faster execution, Kumar S notes that the future competitive edge will rely on interdisciplinary skills rather than technical expertise alone.

The impact is particularly acute for Gen Z. Tessa West, a professor of psychology at New York University, observes that younger workers are entering the professional sphere with fewer foundational social skills, having spent less time navigating the complexities of dating and traditional socialization. West argues that the negotiation and compromise learned in early personal relationships are essential for workplace performance.

Rather than using AI to replace human interaction, some firms are attempting to use it as a training ground. Skillsoft’s CAISY tool, for instance, allows employees to practice difficult conversations in a simulated environment before engaging in the real world. The goal is to build the internal capability to navigate organizational dynamics rather than simply providing a scripted answer.

Without such interventions, Rinne warns that organizations are treating leadership as a math problem rather than a capability problem. As entry-level employees are thrown into a volatile market, the lack of human-centric guidance may leave them unable to navigate the very change AI has accelerated.

Read also:

The Soccer Blueprint: Why Jim Kavanaugh Views Leadership as the Ultimate Competitive Advantage

The $70 Oil Illusion: Why Depleted Global Reserves Signal a Looming Price Spike

Iran Shuts Strait of Hormuz as U.S. Resumes Strikes, Shattering Fragile Ceasefire

A new phenomenon is emerging in the corporate world where the primary dialogue between supervisors and subordinates is being mediated entirely by artificial intelligence.
