FIFA<\/a> has launched disciplinary action against the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) and several national team players following a tumultuous end to their World Cup<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n

The governing body confirmed individual charges against midfielder Leandro Paredes<\/a>, full-back Nahuel Molina, assistant coach Roberto Ayala, and forward Thiago Almada<\/a> over altercations following Spain<\/a>‘s victory in the final. Spanish midfielder Gavi has also been cited for unsporting behavior.<\/p>\n

Spain secured its second World Cup title through an extra-time goal from Ferran Torres<\/a>, but the victory was marred by physical clashes at the final whistle. Paredes faces three separate counts of assault after confronting Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi. Molina was hit with two assault charges\u2014one completed and one attempted\u2014alongside an unsporting conduct count, while Ayala was charged with assault following a confrontation with Dani Olmo. Ayala has since indicated an intention to issue a personal apology to Olmo.<\/p>\n

Beyond the physical altercations in the final, FIFA<\/a> opened a comprehensive case against the AFA regarding political displays during Argentina’s 2-1 semi-final triumph over England. Following that match, Argentine players posed with a banner stating “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” asserting sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n

The 1982 conflict over the South Atlantic archipelago resulted in 649 Argentine and 255 British military fatalities, alongside three civilian deaths. The islands remain a British controlled territory, though sovereignty claims remain a deeply sensitive national issue in Argentina. The diplomatic fallout prompted the British government to demand a formal investigation from football’s global governing body.<\/p>\n

Under FIFA’s disciplinary framework, the use of sports events for non-sporting or political demonstrations is strictly prohibited. The AFA previously faced sanctions for an identical display in 2014, when the team unfurled a similar banner prior to a pre-World Cup exhibition match against Slovenia in La Plata.<\/p>\n

The current proceedings against the AFA extend beyond political expression. The association is also facing charges for team misconduct, discriminatory chants, racist abuse, late kick-offs, security protocol failures, and spectator misconduct, including object throwing during matches throughout the tournament. All named parties have been given the opportunity to present formal responses before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee renders its decisions.<\/p>\n
