According to figures released on July 27 by China’s National Bureau of Statistics<\/a>, the nation’s chipmakers registered a 2,579% profit expansion during the first half of the year. This surge reflects a structural shift in global supply chains: while international technology developers divert advanced fabrication capacity toward artificial intelligence processors, Chinese foundries have captured significant demand for legacy chips and older-generation memory required in smartphones, personal computers, and automotive systems.<\/p>\n

The public debut of ChangXin Memory Technologies<\/a> (CXMT<\/a>) highlights this export momentum. Following a $9.8 billion initial public offering on Shanghai\u2019s STAR Market<\/a> on July 27, CXMT shares surged 470% during their first day of trading, elevating the DRAM producer into mainland China’s most valuable listed entity. The company, which ranks as the world’s fourth-largest memory maker, has drawn attention from foreign tech firms; Apple has lobbied Washington for guarantees that CXMT will not be added to the U.S. Entity List, which would mandate strict export licensing requirements.<\/p>\n

In the artificial intelligence sector, domestic development is concentrating on rapid commercial application rather than capital-intensive frontier research. Hours after Moonshot AI<\/a> released the newest version of its Kimi large language model\u2014achieving performance metrics close to top Western systems at a lower cost\u2014industry analysts noted a fundamental divergence in strategy. While American developers market cutting-edge models at premium prices, Chinese firms are delivering applied AI solutions designed to integrate into existing consumer and enterprise ecosystems at competitive price points.<\/p>\n

This export resilience contrasts sharply with conditions inside mainland China, where intense domestic competition\u2014frequently called “involution”\u2014has squeezed corporate earnings across green technology, electric vehicles, and industrial goods. Local government subsidies designed to champion priority sectors have resulted in widespread overcapacity, forcing businesses into severe price reductions. Premier Li Qiang and market observers have likened this demanding internal environment to a corporate “fitness center” that forces extreme operational efficiency.<\/p>\n

The challenging landscape has split fortunes among multinational corporations. Long-standing global brands like Nike, Starbucks, and General Motors have experienced domestic revenue declines as cost-conscious consumers pivot toward capable domestic competitors. In response, China’s State Council unveiled its first standalone five-year plan for consumption on July 13, setting a target of 60 trillion yuan (nearly $9 trillion) in annual retail sales by 2030. Achieving that goal requires a 3.7% annual consumption growth pace over the next five years, down from the 5.0% rate recorded during the first half of the decade.<\/p>\n

Policymakers continue to resist direct stimulus payments or household subsidies. President Xi Jinping<\/a> has explicitly warned against welfarism, directing state capital toward structural human development, including early-education subsidies, elderly care facilities, and social safety nets.<\/p>\n

Household spending patterns have consequently bifurcated into strict bargain-hunting for basic daily necessities and selective splurging on lifestyle expenditures. While spending on staples like milk and rice remains price-sensitive, demand continues to hold up for outdoor gear, pet care, and collectible merchandise like Pop Mart Labubu dolls. Employment platform Zhaopin reported that hiring growth in pet services ranked second overall in March, trailing only robotics.<\/p>\n

Carol Liao, Greater China chair for Boston Consulting Group, noted that while goods consumption remains soft, service consumption continues to outperform headline GDP growth. Meanwhile, the automotive sector reflects the severity of the domestic retail slowdown. Chinese vehicle sales dropped 23.2% year-over-year last month to 1.6 million units, prompting the Chinese Passenger Car Association to forecast a 14% contraction in full-year domestic automobile sales to 20.4 million units. Declining purchase incentives for electric vehicles and aggressive price cuts have led buyers to delay purchases, even as vehicle exports jumped 70% year-over-year to 1.1 million units last year.<\/p>\n
