Three regional bank presidents—Beth Hammack of the Cleveland Fed, Neel Kashkari of the Minneapolis Fed, and Lorie Logan of the Dallas Fed—dissented from the majority to advocate for an immediate quarter-point interest rate increase.

Presiding over his second rate-setting meeting, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh faces opposing economic and political forces. Appointed by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly pushed the central bank to reduce interest rates, Warsh told lawmakers earlier this month that he maintains “no tolerance” for elevated inflation. The central bank operates under a dual mandate established by Congress to promote maximum employment and stable prices, a balance currently strained as external energy shocks threaten price stability without boosting economic output.

U.S. inflation has remained above the Fed’s 2% annual target for more than five years, beginning in early 2021 during the rapid post-pandemic economic reopening. While 11 interest rate hikes implemented across 2022 and 2023 brought price expansion down from a peak above 9% in mid-2022, progress toward the target has largely stalled.

Recent price pressures have been heavily driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial transit point for one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies. The closure caused historical supply disruptions, briefly driving crude oil prices above $100 a barrel last week. Although crude has retreated slightly, prices remain $10 to $15 higher per barrel than at the same time last year. Shipping risk has expanded further as Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen conduct ongoing attacks against commercial tankers near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.

Beyond foreign conflict, domestic cost drivers include newly enacted tariffs on foreign goods under the Trump administration and a surge of capital expenditure tied to artificial intelligence development. Massive investments in AI data centers have driven up demand and prices for specialized computer chips, power grid infrastructure, and electricity, keeping underlying core inflation firm even as residential rent increases begin to slow.

Financial market expectations have shifted rapidly toward policy tightening. Pricing data from the CME FedWatch tool indicates that 76% of Wall Street traders now expect a rate increase at the central bank’s next gathering on Sept. 15-16, up from 59% a month ago. Only 29% of traders had anticipated a hike at this week’s meeting.

Addressing the central bank’s stance earlier this month, Fed Governor Christopher Waller cautioned against policy inaction, stating that “sternly staring at inflation until it melts before our withering gaze is not an option.” Analysts Joseph Egelhof and Guneet Dhingra at BNP Paribas Securities noted that policymaker patience with persistent price increases is virtually exhausted, leaving significant potential for a rate hike in September.

Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics, observed that central bankers must evaluate whether current price surges represent a temporary disturbance or a sustained trend stemming from prolonged blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.

The central bank’s path forward will depend heavily on upcoming economic releases. On Thursday, the Commerce Department will publish its initial estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product alongside June data for the personal consumption expenditures price index, which serves as the Fed’s primary measure for tracking consumer price behavior.

Read also:

Airbus A350-1000ULR Completes Record 24-Hour Test Flight for Qantas Project Sunrise

Fauci Clashes With Senate Panel, Invokes Fifth Amendment Over 100 Times Despite Biden Pardon

Fed Keeps Interest Rates at 3.5%-3.75% as Middle East Conflict Drives Inflation Concerns

The Federal Reserve voted 9-3 on Wednesday to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged at approximately 3.6%, marking its fifth consecutive policy pause despite persistent inflationary pressure fueled by military conflict in the Middle East and elevated energy prices.
