Apple Inc. is planning to increase memory capacity across its future iPhone 18 lineup to support more demanding artificial intelligence features, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.<\/p>\n
In a report shared on social media platform X, Kuo indicated that the standard iPhone 18 and a new “iPhone 18e” model will feature 9GB of RAM. This represents a 12.5% increase over the 8GB expected for the upcoming iPhone 17 series. The 9GB configuration will reportedly be achieved through the use of six 1.5GB DRAM chips.<\/p>\n
The hardware shift is driven by the requirements of on-device artificial intelligence. Unlike cloud-based AI, which processes data on remote servers, on-device AI performs computations locally on the handset to improve speed and privacy. These tasks require significant memory resources to maintain performance.<\/p>\n
Both the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to be powered by a new A20 chip. While Apple typically launches its flagship Pro models in the autumn, Kuo anticipates the standard iPhone 18 and 18e will follow a staggered release schedule, with an expected debut in March or April 2027.<\/p>\n
The high-end segment of the 2026 lineup, including the iPhone 18 Pro and a rumored foldable device potentially named the iPhone Ultra, is expected to arrive in the second half of 2026. These premium models will reportedly feature 12GB of RAM\u2014using eight 1.5GB chips\u2014and will utilize a more powerful A20 Pro processor.<\/p>\n
Apple has increasingly focused on hardware specifications that can support its “Apple Intelligence” suite. The company traditionally uses its Pro-tier devices to debut higher memory capacities before eventually trickling those upgrades down to more affordable models.
