The Egyptian military arrested 223 people during a security operation against criminal networks in the country’s south, a spokesperson said Monday. <\/p>\n
Army spokesperson Gharib Abdel Hafez said the campaign targeted activities involving drug and weapon trafficking, illegal gold mining, and undocumented migration. The arrests included 87 Egyptians and 136 foreign nationals.<\/p>\n
Authorities seized unlicensed weapons, ammunition, mining equipment, and wireless communication devices. Officials also confiscated 14 vehicles and sums of Egyptian and foreign currency. <\/p>\n
The military reported that some individuals who entered the country illegally surrendered to security points. These individuals were deported to their home countries after their humanitarian needs were met.<\/p>\n
The operation was conducted in coordination with civil police near the Marsa Alam-Edfu road and within the Red Sea region. The military statement said the networks used mills and logistical support for illegal mining activities.<\/p>\n
Recent armed disputes between these groups over territory and smuggling routes resulted in deaths and injuries. The military stated the groups had intimidated employees at foreign and Egyptian mining companies operating in the area.<\/p>\n
