Renters Turn to Vertical Storage as Pet Ownership Soars in Tight Urban Units
Pine wood organizer mounts near entry to hold leashes, harnesses without using floor space

Urban renters are increasingly mounting storage on walls instead of crowding floors, a shift driven by shrinking apartment sizes and a surge in pet ownership that shows no sign of slowing. The trend has turned quirky, breed-shaped organizers into unexpected bestsellers.
Urban Outfitters now lists a pine-wood dachshund silhouette with six pegs along its spine for $49.50. The retailer describes it as a “multi-hook” but the design solves a specific spatial problem: dog-walk gear — leashes, harnesses, treat pouches — piles up near the door, and in units under 600 square feet, every inch of floor counts.

According to the American Pet Products Association, 66% of U.S. households owned a pet in 2024, up from 56% in 1988. Meanwhile, Census Bureau data shows the median size of new multifamily units completed in 2023 was 1,015 square feet — down from 1,117 in 2013. For renters, drilling into drywall often requires landlord approval, making lightweight, screw-mounted wood pieces a practical compromise.
The Dolly Dachshund Wood Wall Multi-Hook ships in an acorn finish with visible grain variation. Urban Outfitters notes hardware and mounting instructions are not included, leaving installation to the buyer. Each peg holds light to moderate weight; the piece is marketed as decorative storage rather than heavy-duty racking.
Made from 100% pine wood, the wall-mounted organizer stretches the dachshund’s familiar long body into a row of six peg-style hooks. Urban Outfitters shows them holding everything from a bag to clothing and accessories, but a dog household could easily put those pegs to work closer to home.
Hang your dog’s leash on one, harness on another and keep a treat pouch or lightweight walking accessories nearby. If you have more than one dog, separate pegs could even give each pup their own spot.
That’s where this piece becomes especially practical. Instead of digging through a basket when your dog is already bouncing by the door, you can create a little walk station where the things you regularly reach for stay visible.
The six separate pegs also make it easier to put items back in roughly the same place. That sounds minor until you’re running late in the morning and can’t remember where you dropped the leash after last night’s walk.
Urban Outfitters notes that natural wood variation makes each piece slightly different. It’s also exclusive to the retailer and comes in an acorn-colored finish. Hardware and mounting instructions aren’t included, so you’ll need to plan for installation separately and make sure it’s securely mounted before loading up the hooks.

Dachshund Decor Is More Fun When It Earns Its Keep
Dog-themed home decor can feel very bland very quickly. This piece works because the dachshund shape isn’t simply decoration. The breed’s famously long silhouette is actually what makes room for all six hooks.
That’s our favorite detail and the clever bit you might not notice immediately. The joke and the function are essentially the same thing. A shorter dog wouldn’t make nearly as convincing a wall organizer.
It could work especially well in a smaller apartment where there isn’t room for a full entryway set-up. Instead of sacrificing floor space to another basket or storage unit, you move frequently used gear onto the wall. You could also hang it near a back door if that’s where your dog heads outside most often.
Of course, dachshund people probably don’t need much convincing when it comes to putting another long dog in the house. One Mini Dachshund’s hilariously guilty reaction to getting in trouble reminded everyone how much personality can fit inside those tiny bodies. Another Dachshund took Halloween to another level with an elaborate ghost photoshoot.
Urban Outfitters’ $49.50 wall hook gives that dachshund obsession an actual job to do. The next time your dog realizes it’s walk time and starts racing toward the door, at least you won’t have to race around looking for the leash.
