Patriots’ 3-Game Streak Hinges on Maye’s Risk-Averse Shift

Maye's decision to prioritize check-downs over deep shots fueled 609 passing yards and seven touchdowns over New England's last two victories.

Drake Maye stopped chasing highlight-reel throws. That tactical restraint, rather than any schematic overhaul, is the primary reason the New England Patriots sit at 4-2 heading into a Thursday night matchup against the Chicago Bears.

The second-year quarterback detailed his adjusted approach to reporters Tuesday, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald. “(It’s) really just letting the game come to you. I think that’s one of the biggest things I’ve tried to focus on,” Maye said. “You want to make the right play instead of the big play. And I’ve tried to really own that and get us to the right plays, and try to check the football and realize that that was really the main thing.”

Checking down has historically been a dirty phrase in football circles. For Maye, it translated directly into points during a three-game winning streak. He threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-16 victory over the New York Jets this past Saturday. One week prior, on October 11, he accounted for five total touchdowns—four through the air—and 374 passing yards in a 45-17 demolition of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The numbers reflect a broader trend across the NFL this season. Second-year quarterbacks who survived erratic rookie campaigns by tightening their decision-making windows have consistently outperformed those relying on arm talent alone. Maye’s early-season struggles mirrored that familiar volatility. His recent production suggests the Patriots coaching staff successfully convinced him that short completions sustain drives better than forced deep shots.

New England now faces a quick turnaround. The Patriots host the Bears on Thursday Night Football at 8:15 PM ET. Both teams enter the short-week contest holding identical 4-2 records.

Roster movement could complicate preparations. Wide receiver AJ Brown returned from injury this past week, though it remains unclear if he will suit up against Chicago. Defensive reinforcements are also materializing. A Patriots cornerback took his first step toward an injury return ahead of the Thursday clash, signaling potential depth improvements on both sides of the ball.
