A.J. Brown cleared for Patriots-Bears Thursday night clash

Receiver confirms availability for Thursday Night Football following four-game absence due to ankle injury.

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown declared himself “absolutely” ready to play in Thursday night’s Week 7 matchup against the Chicago Bears, according to MassLive’s Mark Daniels. The confirmation comes three days after Brown returned from a four-game ankle injury absence during a 26-19 win over the New York Jets, a performance the veteran receiver publicly criticized as his worst career outing.

Brown’s availability reshapes the tactical landscape for a game between two 4-2 teams. Head coach Mike Vrabel‘s Patriots face Ben Johnson‘s Bears on short rest. Both franchises have navigated significant roster damage to reach this point. Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams has dealt with his own physical setbacks throughout the season.

Quarterback Drake Maye outlined exactly how Brown alters defensive math for New England. Maye compared the receiver’s gravity on the field to an NBA star who forces double teams, creating running lanes elsewhere. That schematic advantage was visible even without Brown operating at full capacity against New York. Three different running backs plus Maye himself generated production on the ground against the Jets.

The Jets offense, directed by Geno Smith alongside Braelon Allen and Omar Cooper Jr., tested the Patriots defense more than anticipated. Those same structural vulnerabilities will be targeted by Chicago’s coaching staff Thursday night.

TreVeyon Henderson also returned to the lineup against New York. His presence adds another variable to a backfield that no longer relies solely on misdirection to move the chains now that defenses must account for Brown downfield. The Maye-to-Brown passing connection has yet to produce consistent results in 2025 due to the injury interruption, leaving only a narrow practice window before kickoff at Soldier Field.
