Last-Year Updates Hit Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 and S8

S8 and A9 lines end major updates; S10 and later get seven years

The Galaxy Tab S9 line, the Galaxy Tab S8, and the Galaxy Tab A9 are on a fixed countdown. Samsung has already delivered the final major operating system upgrade to the S8 series and A9, while the S9 series will get one more — One UI 9, based on Android 17. After that, only security patches continue.

The Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE and S9 FE+ shipped in 2023 with One UI 5.1 on Android 13. Under Samsung’s four-major-update policy, this final major OS release is the fourth generation. Security support will continue into 2028. The S8 trio — Tab S8, S8+, S8 Ultra — arrived in February 2022 and already received One UI 8, built on Android 16. Its security updates are scheduled through February 2027.

The Tab A9 and A9+, released in October 2023, are also done with major OS updates, with Android 16 as their last. The timing is tighter than the S-series because the A line targets price-sensitive buyers. Security patches will still arrive for another year.

These devices sit just before Samsung’s policy shift. Starting with the Galaxy Tab S10 in 2024, the company moved to seven years of combined OS and security updates. That promise covers the Galaxy Tab S11 and S12, and, notably, the budget Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ released in 2025.

The Galaxy Tab Active5, aimed at business and enterprise users, follows a separate schedule: four years of OS updates and five years of security patches. Launched in 2024 on Android 14, it should receive updates through Android 18, with security coverage until 2029.

One thing owners should not assume is uniformity. Rollout timing differs by model and region, so a missing update on one tablet does not mean it has been excluded. Users can check under Settings > Software update > Download and install.

These tablets are the last ones released before Samsung’s more generous support policy.
