Saudi Federation Weighs Renard’s Future Amid Criticism, 2026 World Cup Preparations Loom

Al-Riyadh newspaper reported the Saudi Federation intends to dismiss coach Hervé Renard. This potential move comes before the national team’s preparation period for the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to begin next summer.

The newspaper’s report, published on Wednesday, cited private sources. These sources confirmed a directive from the Saudi Football Federation board. The board aims to relieve French coach Hervé Renard from his position with the senior national team. They seek a replacement coach before the 2026 World Cup finals preparations commence.

Al-Riyadh’s sources further indicated potential options for a new coach. The choice might fall between a current Saudi Roshan League coach or a new coach entering the Kingdom for the first time. This new coach must align with the ambitions of Saudi officials and fans. Their level should also match the reputation and development of Saudi football.

Renard failed to end Saudi Arabia’s prolonged title drought. The team lost to Jordan in the Arab Cup semi-finals. Saudi Arabia will now play the UAE in the third-place match on Thursday.
