Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Division Revives a Carrera GT with Le Mans Spirit

A bespoke restoration transforms a classic supercar into a zero-kilometer masterpiece.

Porsche remains committed to tackling the unique challenges presented by clients at its most exclusive dealerships. This dedication proves essential for turning automotive dreams into reality. The German marque recently unveiled one of its latest creations from the highly exclusive Sonderwunsch Manufaktur customization division. Accessing this section requires a substantial financial commitment, with the final result often costing several hundred thousand euros.

This particular project involved a Carrera GT, one of the most spectacular sports cars in the German manufacturer’s history. More than two decades after its original production, this specific example has undergone a truly unique transformation. Porsche has previously offered upgrades for existing Carrera GTs, but this project went significantly further. The owner of this supercar commissioned Porsche specialists for a comprehensive restoration, followed by a custom paint scheme replicating the colors of the Austrian flag.

The Porsche Carrera GT Salzburg Design: A Global One-Off

The owner chose this specific livery because it replicates the decoration of the Porsche 917 that won Le Mans in 1970, despite the car now residing in Puerto Rico. Bright red and white stripes, applied by hand, adorn the dream roadster’s bodywork. The doors proudly display the winning race number, all protected by a transparent film.

Special details extend to various exterior components. The front and rear pillars, mirror housings, half of the roof, front air duct, and rear diffuser all feature a matte black carbon finish. The grilles on the rear engine cover also come in matte black. The formidable 19-inch alloy wheels maintain their original design, now finished in matching black.

Porsche also undertook significant work on the Carrera GT’s interior. Alcantara, in the same red as the exterior, now covers sections of the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel rim, and central console. Furthermore, a custom luggage set was created, precisely measured to fit the trunk compartment.

A Zero-Kilometer Porsche Carrera GT, Two Decades Later

Porsche’s attention to detail is evident throughout the cabin. Genuine matte carbon finishes the sport seat shells, air vents, and the instrument cluster cover. The seat headrests feature the same black flame-retardant fabric used in the 918 Spyder, which holds FIA homologation for competition use.

Porsche detailed the extensive restoration process applied to this Carrera GT. Technicians completely disassembled the car, meticulously inspecting each critical component of the impressive 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine. These components typically endure the most stress from the engine’s high performance, which delivers a maximum output of 612 CV. Learn more about Porsche Classic restoration services.

This vehicle represents a true marvel of Porsche technology. It achieves a top speed of 330 km/h. The carbon chassis and a curb weight of just 1,380 kilograms ensure exhilarating driving dynamics and sensations. The owner will now experience this Carrera GT as if it were brand new, with the odometer showing zero kilometers. The price remains undisclosed, but it is undoubtedly substantial.
