F1’s 2027 Driver Market Heats Up: Why Carlos Sainz is the Key Player

As the 2026 grid solidifies, all eyes turn to 2027, where Carlos Sainz's contract situation makes him a prime target for ambitious teams.

The 2026 Formula 1 driver market is now fully settled. Red Bull and Racing Bulls confirmed their driver lineups weeks ago. However, attention is already shifting to 2027, as many drivers will become free agents, opening negotiations with any team.

Carlos Sainz stands as a key figure among these free agents. The Spanish driver signed a two-season contract with Williams, including an option for two additional years. He will decide by the end of next year whether to continue with James Vowles’ team or pursue a more appealing opportunity.

“I don’t think Fernando can compete another five years. He’ll do another year, maybe two at most,” Guenther Steiner stated.

Aston Martin is openly seeking a reliable replacement for Fernando Alonso. Alonso will likely retire at the end of 2026 or, at the latest, in 2027. Carlos Sainz’s strong performances in recent years position him as a prime target for many teams on the grid.

Sainz’s Proven Track Record Draws Attention

Guenther Steiner offered his analysis of the 2027 Formula 1 market on The Red Flags podcast. He specifically discussed Carlos Sainz’s position within this evolving landscape.

Steiner, a former team principal for Jaguar and Haas, claims “some teams are following him now, but don’t admit it.” He recalled Red Bull’s past opportunity to bring Sainz back alongside Max Verstappen. “When you make these decisions, you never regret them,” Steiner added, reflecting on such choices.

Carlos Sainz has consistently proven his capabilities across McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams. He secured podium finishes with all three historic teams, including victories with Ferrari. This track record, Steiner noted, makes him a highly desirable driver. For more insights into the broader F1 driver market, you can read analyses from leading motorsport publications. Can Williams Secure Sainz Beyond 2027?

Steiner reiterated that Sainz “will undoubtedly be one of the main candidates” when a team next seeks a driver. He highlighted Sainz’s youth, experience, race wins, and ability to “hold a team together as he has done at Williams.”

“He has all the credibility now,” Steiner, now a MotoGP team owner, stated. “He only needs the right opportunity. As I always say, you have to be in the right place at the right time.”

Aston Martin Emerges as a Potential Destination

Carlos Sainz holds significant prestige within the Formula 1 paddock. Steiner believes a return to a current top team, after his Ferrari exit, will be challenging. However, he considers Sainz a probable first choice for teams on an upward trajectory.

“It will be very difficult to move up the hierarchy, unless you’re a rookie,” Steiner revealed. He predicted Sainz’s opportunity will come next year with a current midfield car, potentially a Williams or an Aston Martin. These teams, he explained, are “looking for someone to take them completely to the top, as Alonso does at Aston Martin.”

“The opportunities are there,” Steiner insisted. He deemed a return to Ferrari for Sainz “very improbable,” and moves to Red Bull or Mercedes “very improbable.” He acknowledged, “But there is always an opportunity, because some of the other teams will perform very well.” Steiner then named Williams or Aston Martin as the primary candidates.

“I would say Williams or Aston Martin are his best opportunity,” Steiner concluded. “Honestly, I don’t think Fernando can compete another five years. He’ll do another year, maybe two at most.”
