The AFCON Crunch: How Premier League Teams Navigate Player Absences
Thirty-two Premier League stars, including Mohamed Salah, are set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving clubs to manage significant gaps in their squads.

Next Sunday, the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco. Thirty-two Premier League players are set to feature, including Liverpool’s star forward, Mohamed Salah.
European clubs previously pushed for a summer schedule for the tournament. The 2019 edition in Egypt notably took place during the summer months.
CAF, however, found no alternative to a January-February schedule. Intense heat conditions forced the Confederation of African Football to revert to this biennial timing.
The upcoming summer World Cup prompted CAF to schedule the Africa Cup of Nations for December and January. This marks the first time the tournament will occur during these months, necessitated by the need to conclude domestic seasons by May.
Premier League teams face a demanding schedule during the tournament period. Each club will play six matches.
Top Teams’ Fortunes Diverge
Arsenal currently leads the Premier League table with 36 points. They hold a two-point advantage over Manchester City and a three-point lead over third-placed Aston Villa.
Arsenal and Aston Villa will remain unaffected by player departures. Neither club has any players participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Manchester City, however, will lose two key players. Egyptian Omar Marmoush and Algerian Rayan Ait Nouri will depart for international duty. Manager Pep Guardiola must now consider how to compensate for their absence.
Guardiola will lose valuable depth, even if they primarily serve as reserves. These players offer crucial options when situations become challenging.
The tournament might offer a timely respite for Mohamed Salah and Liverpool. Salah had recently criticized both the club’s management and coach Arne Slot, creating tension.
Clubs Grapple with Player Exodus
Sunderland faces the most significant impact from the Africa Cup of Nations. Six players from their squad will travel to participate in the tournament, led by Moroccan Shams El Din Talbi.
Sunderland currently sits eighth in the league with 26 points from 16 matches. Their strong start to the season now faces a considerable challenge.
Manchester United will be without three players: Noussair Mazraoui, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo. Fulham also sees three of its players depart for the tournament.
Burnley will similarly miss three players. Tunisian Hannibal Mejbri is among those heading to the competition.
Brentford, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and West Ham United will each lose two players. These clubs face adjustments to their regular lineups.
Brighton & Hove Albion will be without one player. Crystal Palace also faces the absence of a single player. For more details on the tournament and its schedule, visit the official CAF website.
