Peugeot Gears Up for Mid-Size Crossover Battle with New Symbioz Rival

Renault's Symbioz has achieved significant sales success, prompting Peugeot to develop a strategic new model positioned between the 2008 and 3008.

Over 40,000 Renault Symbioz units sold across Europe in the first half of 2025. More than 26,500 of these sales occurred in France alone. These figures highlight the model’s success since its market launch just over 18 months ago. Renault introduced the Symbioz nearly two years ago as a replacement for the combustion-engine Mégane.

The Symbioz crossover has proven a significant commercial success for Renault. This model shares its platform with the Captur. Its market performance has remained strong, even with the introduction of the Dacia Bigster. Renault initially feared the larger Dacia model might impact Symbioz sales. However, both vehicles have found their own market segments. The Symbioz, available in a hybrid version, continues to gain traction across Europe. Peugeot, Renault’s rival, is now preparing its own response to this success.

Peugeot to Position New Crossover Between 2008 and 3008

Peugeot currently experiences one of its most successful periods. The brand boasts a comprehensive and fully renewed product lineup. It expects to conclude 2025 with significant sales volumes, ranking among Stellantis’s top fourteen manufacturers. Peugeot now looks to the future, focusing beyond entry-level models like the upcoming third-generation 208, previewed by the Polygon concept. The mid-range segment, currently dominated by the Symbioz, is its new target.

Peugeot has no plans to discontinue the 308 compact model; it will remain a respected part of the lineup. Instead, the company is developing a new crossover. This model will slot between the 2008 and 3008. Peugeot intends to utilize the “STLA Small” platform, mirroring Renault’s strategy to minimize costs. This platform choice also indicates the new model will not offer any four-wheel-drive options.

Information remains limited at this stage. The new model will share its architecture with the upcoming generation of the 2008. The 2008 itself is a successful SUV, with over 46,400 units sold in Europe year-to-date. The current 2008 measures 4,304 millimeters in length, while the 3008 is 4,542 millimeters long. This leaves a clear 238-millimeter gap between the two, providing ample space for an additional model. For more insights into Peugeot’s market strategy, visit Automotive News.

Peugeot’s Future Model to Feature Hybrid and Electric Powertrains

The naming convention for the new model presents a challenge. Peugeot’s current system uses the first number for segment positioning and one or two zeros for body type. The company may need to devise a new commercial designation, possibly involving three zeros. However, it is confirmed that this new model will arrive before the next decade. It will offer both electrified combustion versions, specifically MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicles), and purely battery-electric options.

Alain Favey, Peugeot CEO, confirmed this multi-energy strategy in late summer of last year. His statements applied to all planned developments within the B and C segments, not just this specific model. Favey reiterated Peugeot’s commitment to prioritizing a multi-energy approach until 2030. This strategy avoids limiting the brand to a single energy source. These developments signal interesting times ahead, and the industry awaits further moves from Peugeot.
