Institutional Crypto Accumulation Accelerates as Metaplanet, Tom Lee and BlackRock Expand Holdings

BlackRock's BUIDL tokenized fund surpasses $2 billion in assets as onchain perpetual trading volume exceeds $1 trillion for the month.

Japanese corporate Bitcoin buyer Metaplanet added 4,279 bitcoin to its treasury, pushing total holdings to 35,102 BTC. The purchase cements the Tokyo-listed firm’s position among the largest publicly traded corporate holders of the asset globally, trailing only MicroStrategy and a handful of other entities that have adopted digital assets as primary balance sheet reserves.

Metaplanet began pivoting toward Bitcoin in early 2024, mirroring a strategy pioneered by MicroStrategy under Michael Saylor. Unlike U.S. firms constrained by Financial Accounting Standards Board rules that previously required companies to mark crypto holdings at their lowest historical cost, Japanese accounting standards allowed Metaplanet to report fair value earlier, making the strategy more viable on public ledgers. The FASB rule change took full effect for U.S. companies in late 2024, accelerating broader corporate adoption worldwide.

Fundstrat Global Advisors co-founder Tom Lee executed a separate accumulation strategy, purchasing $130 million in Ether near the end of the year. Lee retains $1 billion in cash reserves heading into 2026. His continued focus on ETH diverges from the corporate trend heavily favoring Bitcoin treasuries, reflecting institutional disagreement over which network offers superior long-term risk-adjusted returns. While Bitcoin trades near $87,000 with dominance holding at 59.0%, Ether sits around $2,975. Binance Coin recently moved to $855, while Solana remained flat near $124.

Traditional asset management integration deepened alongside these purchases. BlackRock’s BUIDL tokenized fund surpassed $2 billion in total assets under management and distributed $100 million in dividends to investors. Launched in March 2024 on the Ethereum blockchain, BUIDL tokenizes U.S. dollar liquidity backed by cash, U.S. Treasuries and repurchase agreements. Crossing the $2 billion threshold signals that yield-bearing tokenized products are migrating from experimental pilot programs to standard institutional portfolio allocations. Rival funds from Franklin Templeton and Fidelity continue to compete in this rapidly expanding sector, which industry estimates suggest could tokenize trillions in traditional assets by the end of the decade.

Derivatives activity reached new scale as onchain perpetual futures trading volume exceeded $1 trillion for the month. Decentralized perpetual platforms allow traders to apply leverage directly through smart contracts without routing orders through centralized exchanges or traditional clearinghouses. This milestone underscores a structural shift where decentralized finance infrastructure now processes volumes comparable to legacy derivatives venues during peak market cycles, though it also introduces systemic risks tied to smart contract vulnerabilities and cascading liquidations.

Those vulnerabilities materialized when Unleash Protocol suffered a $3.9 million exploit. Attackers routed the stolen capital through Tornado Cash, an Ethereum-based privacy mixer sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control in 2022. Despite sanctions intended to deter illicit use, Tornado Cash remains technically operational on the permissionless blockchain, continuing to serve as a primary laundering tool for DeFi attackers. The incident highlights the persistent security gap between the rapid deployment of new decentralized protocols and the maturity of their underlying code audits.

Regulatory efforts attempting to govern these markets stalled in Asia. South Korea delayed its comprehensive cryptocurrency regulation framework after lawmakers failed to reach consensus on stablecoin oversight. The deadlock leaves one of the world’s most active retail crypto trading markets operating under fragmented guidelines. South Korean regulators have struggled to balance consumer protection with market innovation since implementing the Virtual Asset User Protection Act in 2024, and the absence of clear stablecoin rules complicates compliance for domestic exchanges handling billions in daily fiat-to-crypto conversions.

Infrastructure demand continues independent of price action. The chief executive of Abundant Mining reported that recent Bitcoin price volatility has not reduced demand for mining hardware or hosting services. Industrial-scale miners are increasingly securing long-term power purchase agreements and optimizing fleet efficiency rather than reacting to short-term spot price fluctuations. With the April 2024 halving reducing block rewards to 3.125 BTC, operational efficiency dictates survival far more than speculative price movements.

Outside financial markets, lifestyle brand REKT teased a collaboration with media platform WorldStarHipHop involving branded drinks, signaling continued crossover attempts between crypto-native culture and mainstream entertainment audiences.
